Day 19: Mindful music drawing

Today’s activity is written by Valerie Hechanova, Child & Family Therapist, Art Therapist, MC:AT, RCC.

Mindfulness is paying attention to the "here and now" without changing or judging the present moment. We can pay attention to our internal experiences such as our physiological sensations, emotions and thoughts. We can also pay attention to our external experiences through our five senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell.

Mindfulness can be practices through many activities like walking through nature or eating a tasty snack. Mindfulness can also be practiced during art making such a mindful scribble drawing. Drawing mindfully to music can be a way of grounding your body and mind as well as practicing paying attention to the present moment.

Pick a calm and soothing lyrical or instrumental song. Pick any writing or drawing tool. Pick any writing surface such as a blank piece of paper or a page in your notebook. While the song is playing, draw scribbles and lines continuously over the surface. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Just make marks on the paper. Draw while paying attention to your internal and external experiences connected to the song and drawing.
