Day 18: Mindful eating

Today, Amy Kakebeeke - a local health coach and member of the Foundation team - shares about mindful eating.

“Mindful eating is the practice of paying full attention to your food, your body’s hunger signals and the experience of eating - without distractions or guilt.

Instead of rushing through meals or eating on autopilot, it’s about slowing down and truly savouring each bite. This helps you recognize when you’re actually hungry versus eating out of boredom, stress or habit. When you become aware of why you’re eating and how food makes you feel, you naturally start making better choices that support your overall health and wellbeing.

Think about the last time you ate something while scrolling your phone or watching TV - did you even taste it? Mindful eating brings you back to the present, helping you enjoy your food more. It’s not about what you eat but how you eat. When you listen to your body’s signals, you feel more in control of your food choices. Being present during meals reduces stress and emotional eating, making mindful eating just as good for your mental health as it is for your physical health.

It’s a simple shift that can change everything - because when you’re mindful, you eat with intention instead of impulse.”
